For quick and convenient checkout, you can save your preferred payment method to your account.

  • Cash
  • Store gift cards
  • EBT cards at select retailers
  • International payments
  • Any other forms of payment not listed as accepted above

Add a payment method

You can add payment methods at any time—before, after, or while placing an order.

To add a payment on the Instacart website—

  1. At the top left, click the 3 horizontal lines
  2. Click Account settings
  3. Click Payment methods
  4. Click Add next to the payment method you want to add to your account
  5. Enter card information and billing address. Then click Continue

To add a payment in the Instacart app—

  1. Tap the Account icon in the upper right corner
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Select the payment method under Payment methods
  4. Tap Add next to the payment method you would like to add to your account
  5. Enter card information and billing address. Then tap Save

If you need to update a previous payment method, you must remove it from your account and then add it again with the correct payment information.

Remove a payment method

To remove a payment method on the Instacart website—

  1. At the top left, click the 3 horizontal lines
  2. Click Account settings
  3. Click Payment methods
  4. Click Delete next to the payment method you want to remove

In the app—

  1. Tap the Account icon in the upper right corner
  2. Tap Settings
  3. Tap Payment methods
  4. Tap the pencil icon in the upper right-hand corner. Then tap the red circle on the left-hand side next to the card you want to remove. Then tap Delete

Paying with PayPal

Add PayPal as a form of payment to your Instacart account—

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Select Debit/Credit, PayPal, and more under Payment methods
  3. Select Add next to Paypal
  4. This redirects you to the Paypal login flow
  5. Follow the prompts to log into Paypal
  6. Select Update

PayPal restrictions—

  • At this time, prescriptions and alcohol can’t be purchased using PayPal. If you’d like to place an order containing these items, you will need to select an alternative payment method.
  • You can only add 1 PayPal account to your Instacart account. To use a different PayPal account, you need to delete the PayPal account you have on file and add a new one.

Paying with Venmo

Add Venmo as a form of payment to your Instacart account—

  1. Go to Settings
  2. Select Debit/Credit, PayPal, and more under Payment methods
  3. Select Add next to Venmo
  4. This redirects you to the Venmo login flow
  5. Follow the prompts to log into Venmo
  6. Select Update 

Venmo restrictions—

  • Non-U.S. purchases 
  • Prescriptions or alcohol 
  • Instacart+ subscriptions
  • Restaurant orders powered by Uber Eats

Troubleshooting

Here are some things to try if you can’t add a new card or your card declines—

  • If you’re on a desktop, try switching browsers, reentering the payment card, or updating the card information on the app.
  • If you’re on the app, try switching to a desktop.
  • Make sure there are enough funds on your card to cover the authorization hold.
  • If you’re getting a message that you can’t add any more cards today, wait 24 hours and try again.
  • Reach out to us if you’re getting a 1369a error code.
